Special needs plans (SNPs) provide specialized coverage and services to individuals with chronic or disabling health conditions. Individuals who live in certain institutions (like a nursing home) or who have Medicaid might also qualify for a special needs plan.
Most nursing home care falls under the category of custodial care which is not covered by Medicare. But, Medicare does pay for medically necessary care if you are at a certified skilled nursing facility (SNF). 100% of the first 20 days of a covered Special Needs Plan stay is paid by Medicare. In 2024, for a Medicare approved stay, a per day copayment of $204 is required for days 21-100.
Medicare, for people 65 or older, is a federal health insurance program. It also covers younger people with qualifying disabilities and health conditions.
Medicaid, a joint federal and state program, provides health coverage for qualifying people with limited income and resources.
